A recent incident in the West Philippine Sea involving the Philippine Navy and China Navy has raised concerns about maritime safety. According to reports, a Chinese Navy vessel conducted “dangerous maneuvers” off Pag-asa Island, prompting the Philippine Navy vessel, BRP Benguet, to issue consecutive radio challenges to China’s People’s Liberation Army Navy Ship 621 (PLAN 621).

The Chinese vessel was reportedly shadowing the Philippine Navy vessel at a close distance of 80 yards and attempted to cross its bow with a closest point of approach of 350 yards. These actions, which violate the Collision Regulations (COLREG), pose significant risks to maritime safety and the lives of those at sea.

Both the Western Command (WesCom) chief, Vice Admiral Alberto Carlos, and the AFP chief, General Romeo Brawner Jr, have expressed concern over the dangerous maneuvers conducted by the Chinese Navy. They emphasized the importance of adhering to international law and maintaining the safety of personnel during maritime missions.

This incident is not an isolated case, as there have been previous reports of Chinese vessels engaging in provocative actions in the South China Sea. The Philippines has accused a Chinese vessel of using a laser against its coast guard, and there have been instances where Philippine Coast Guard cutters and Chinese warships almost collided at sea.

The international community, including the United States, has also expressed concerns over China’s aggressive behavior in the region. The US has warned China against the harassment of Philippine vessels, emphasizing the need to uphold the rules-based international order.

In conclusion, the recent incident involving the Philippine Navy and China Navy highlights the importance of promoting maritime safety and adherence to international law. Such dangerous maneuvers pose risks to both Philippine and Chinese personnel, and it is crucial for China to halt these unsafe actions and conduct themselves in a professional manner.
