Joint maritime and air patrols in the South China Sea between the Philippines and the United States military have been launched, according to Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. He described it as a “significant initiative” aimed at bolstering the interoperability of the two countries’ military forces. The decision to conduct these patrols comes amidst a rapid strengthening of ties between the Philippines and the United States, including an increase in the number of Philippine bases accessible to the US military, some of which are facing Taiwan.
President Marcos made the announcement on the social media platform X, stating that the patrols would take place off the island of Mavulis. This island is the northernmost point of the Philippines, located approximately 100 km (62 miles) off Taiwan. The announcement comes just a day after President Marcos expressed his concerns about the situation in the South China Sea, stating that it had become more dire with the Chinese military inching closer to the Philippine coastline.
These joint patrols are likely to raise tensions with China, which has warned the Philippines against engaging in activities with the United States. China claims most of the South China Sea through a “nine-dash line,” encroaching into the exclusive economic zones (EEZ) of neighboring countries such as the Philippines, Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Vietnam.
Under President Marcos, the Philippines has sought to rekindle ties with Washington following a cooler relationship with a previous administration that leaned closer to China. As a result, there have been repeated standoffs between Chinese and Filipino vessels in waters claimed by both countries, leading to concerns of an escalation.
The joint maritime and air patrols will start off the Batanes islands and head west to the South China Sea, as stated in a Philippine military statement. The Philippines will deploy three navy vessels, two FA-50 light combat aircraft, and an A-29B Super Tucano light attack plane. The United States will mobilize a littoral combat ship and a P-9A maritime patrol and reconnaissance aircraft.
Jay Batongbacal, director of the Manila-based Institute for Maritime Affairs and Law of the Sea, believes that this joint patrol demonstrates the Philippines’ firm stance on the South China Sea. He states that it shows the determination of the current administration in pursuing a more robust policy with respect to the West Philippine Sea, referring to the Philippine EEZ.
