In a recent development, tensions between China and Canada have escalated following Canada’s accusations of unsafe maneuvers by Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) jets in the South China Sea. China has swiftly responded to the allegations, denying any wrongdoing and asserting its commitment to maintaining peace and security in the region.

Canada’s accusation stems from its claim that two Chinese PLA jets performed unsafe actions in close proximity to a Canadian warship during a recent freedom of navigation operation in the South China Sea. The Canadian government expressed concerns over the potential risk to the safety of its personnel and called on China to uphold international norms and act responsibly.

The Chinese government has staunchly denied the accusation, stating that the PLA jets were conducting routine operations within their own jurisdiction and adhering to international laws and regulations. China emphasized that it has always been committed to ensuring the safety of all vessels and personnel in the South China Sea.

Chinese defence ministry spokesman Zhang Xiaogang said on Saturday that a Canadian helicopter conducted flights of “unknown intent” to approach the airspace around the Paracel Islands, known in China as the Xisha.

Zhang said the People’s Liberation Army’s naval and air forces had identified the Canadian helicopter and repeatedly issued warnings, but it “refused to respond” and “took provocative actions such as flying at ultra-low altitude”.

China has taken a strong position in response to Canada’s accusation, calling it groundless and politically motivated. Chinese officials have accused Canada of interfering in regional affairs and perpetuating a biased narrative against China.
They emphasized the need for Canada to respect China’s sovereignty and refrain from provocative actions in the South China Sea.

China has reiterated its commitment to maintaining peace, stability, and freedom of navigation in the South China Sea. Chinese authorities have urged Canada to engage in constructive dialogue rather than making unfounded accusations that may escalate tensions in the region.
They also reiterated China’s call for peaceful resolution of territorial disputes through negotiation and consultation.

Efforts have been made by both countries to address the issue through diplomatic channels. Officials from China and Canada have engaged in discussions to seek a resolution and prevent further escalation.

Dialogue and cooperation have been emphasized to ensure a peaceful resolution and the continuation of healthy bilateral relations.

The recent accusation by Canada against China regarding ‘unsafe’ actions by PLA jets in the South China Sea has caused a strain in China-Canada relations.

China has firmly denied the allegations and condemned Canada for what it regards as politically motivated interference.

It is crucial for both countries to engage in constructive dialogue and diplomatic efforts to prevent further escalation and find a peaceful resolution to their differences while upholding international norms in the South China Sea.
